Why Florida pools can turn quickly
Algae growth accelerates when sanitizer falls behind demand. A thunderstorm, heavy swimmer load, clogged filter, circulation problem, or several very sunny days can change conditions faster than many homeowners expect.
Visible algae is usually a symptom of an underlying problem—not simply a lack of algaecide. Correcting the sanitizer level and the condition that allowed growth is more important than adding products without a plan.
Maintain enough free chlorine for the CYA level
Cyanuric acid protects chlorine from sunlight, but it also changes how much free chlorine is needed. A fixed chlorine target without considering CYA can leave the pool under-sanitized even when a test shows some chlorine present.
Test consistently and use an appropriate chlorine-to-CYA relationship for the sanitizer system. Salt pools also need enough generator output and pump runtime to replace the chlorine consumed each day.
Brush the places circulation misses
Steps, benches, corners, behind ladders, around lights, beneath tile lines, and shaded walls can receive less circulation. Brushing disturbs early growth and exposes it to chlorinated water before a small patch becomes a larger problem.
Use a brush that is appropriate for the pool surface. Aggressive metal brushing is not suitable for every finish.
Keep water moving and the filter working
Circulation distributes sanitizer and carries suspended debris toward the filter. Confirm that the water level is correct, baskets are clear, returns are positioned effectively, and the pump schedule matches the pool’s needs.

Respond to rain and heavy use
Rain can introduce contaminants and, when the pool overflows or water is drained, dilute salt and stabilizer. Heavy use adds sunscreen, sweat, debris, and other chlorine demand. Test after major weather or use instead of waiting for the next routine date.
Know the common warning signs
- Slippery steps or walls
- Yellow or green dust that returns after brushing
- Chlorine dropping faster than expected
- Cloudiness despite normal-looking pH
- Weak return flow or a rapidly rising filter pressure
- Small dark spots that resist normal brushing
Different problems can look similar. Pollen, sand, metals, scale, and organic stains are sometimes mistaken for algae. Confirm the cause before using specialty treatments.
What to do when algae appears
- Test free chlorine, pH, and CYA accurately.
- Check circulation and filter condition.
- Raise and maintain chlorine at an appropriate treatment level for the measured CYA.
- Brush affected surfaces thoroughly.
- Run the system as needed and clean the filter when pressure or flow indicates.
- Retest and continue treatment until the water is clear, surfaces are clean, and chlorine demand returns to normal.
The best algae treatment is consistency
